If you’re tired of the endless cycle of managing anxiety symptoms without experiencing true, lasting relief, then this article is for you.
I often tell my clients that when it comes to anxiety, you’re either revolving or evolving; meaning you’re either spinning in repetitive mental and emotional patterns, or you’re growing into a new way of being — one that’s completely free from anxiety with new, positive behaviours and experiences.
Understanding the Revolving Door of Anxiety
Most clients who present to me with anxiety are trapped in what I call the “revolving door” of anxiety management. They’ve learned coping techniques, they might practise breathing exercises and maybe even take medication. While these approaches provide temporary relief of the symptoms, they don’t address the deeper patterns that keep anxiety alive in your system.
These patterns of anxiety have served a purpose at one point in your life. Perhaps they protected you by helping you stay alert in challenging situations, or by functioning at ultra high capacity to achieve something important. But now, they’ve become counterproductive, automatically triggering an anxious reaction, even when there’s no real danger.
The Illusion of Control
One of the most challenging aspects of anxiety is how it creates the illusion that your thoughts and feelings are controlling you, rather than the other way around. When you’ve been revolving in patterns of stress, overwhelm, or anxiety for a long time, these patterns take over the steering wheel of your life.
But here’s the fundamental truth that can transform your relationship with anxiety: You are the thinker, not the thoughts; You are the feeler, not the feelings. This distinction is crucial because it puts you back in the driver’s seat of your emotional experience.
Creating New Neural Pathways to Freedom
Neurological research has shown that it takes approximately 63 days for a new way of being to establish itself as your “new normal.” This is because your brains need time to create and strengthen new neural pathways while pruning away the old networks that perpetuate anxiety. |
Think of it as like creating a new riverbed for your thoughts and emotions to flow through. Simply managing symptoms is like placing temporary dams in the old riverbed — it might work for a while, but the water will eventually find its way back to the familiar path. Instead, you need to create an entirely new channel for your mental and emotional energy to flow and continue to deepen those riverbeds with practice and attention. That’s why I continue to work with my clients over a three-month period, supporting them to embed these new ways until they become your new normal.
The Power of Intentional Evolution
The journey from anxiety to lasting peace requires more than just reducing symptoms — it demands the creation of a new state of being. This is where practices like meditation become powerful tools for transformation. When you regularly sit with the vision of your future self, attaching positive emotions to this new way of being, you create both the electrical (thoughts) and chemical (feelings) foundations for lasting change.
What’s fascinating is that this isn’t just philosophical thinking — it’s backed by science. Studies show that your internal state impacts your physical reality. When you practise maintaining states of peace and calm consistently, focusing on the future you desire to create, you begin attracting experiences that match this new energetic “signature” that you’re putting out into the world. The positive experiences you begin to attract further embed your new neural pathways as your normal mode of operating. And eventually you begin to experience a whole new way of living, grounded in inner peace and optimism.
The Upward Spiral of Growth
As you begin this journey of evolution, something remarkable happens: You create an upward spiral of positive change. Each small success in maintaining peace builds confidence, which in turn makes it easier for you to choose peaceful responses in challenging situations. This positive momentum provides the motivation to keep growing and evolving.
Beyond Symptom Management to True Freedom
True freedom from anxiety isn’t about perfect coping mechanisms or never feeling anxious again. It’s about aligning with the part of yourself that is naturally at peace and content — the larger, greater part of you that knows only peace — a part that exists in all of us, naturally from birth, but often gets buried under layers of habitual stress responses.
Remember, no one can give you peace and happiness, but you can learn to access and maintain these states yourself. It’s about recognizing that within you exists a wellspring of calm and contentment that knows no limits and is always accessible when you know how to tap into it.
The journey from revolving in anxiety to evolving into peace requires patience, commitment, and often, proper guidance. But with consistent practice and the right approach, you can create not just temporary relief but a new normal — one where peace and contentment are your default states, and anxiety becomes a distant memory rather than a constant companion.
Are you ready to stop revolving and start evolving?
The path to lasting freedom from anxiety begins with a single step: Choosing to create a new way of being, rather than just managing the old one.
