How to Break Free from the Revolving Door of the Anxiety Cycle

Anxiety. It grips you like a vice, tightening around your chest, leaving you breathless and overwhelmed. Fearful thoughts race through your mind, painting worst-case scenarios, fuelling the fire that’s growing within you second by second. Try as you might to push those thoughts away; the more you push, the bigger they become. You can’t sleep. Your heart races, your palms sweat and your breath quickens as you desperately grasp at ways to calm yourself.

I know those feelings because I’ve experienced them myself. I know what it’s like to feel stressed, anxious and overwhelmed. I was stuck in habitual stress response patterns that were hard wired into my psyche from my response to my environment. As a result, my body was in a continuous loop of heightened stress, producing stress hormones even when the danger had subsided.

It took me years of personal growth and learning to discover that I had the power to break free from these habitual stress responses to create sustained inner peace.

Understanding The Anxiety Cycle

The first step in treating anxiety is symptom relief. Symptom relief techniques using medication, relaxation, meditation etc are important because they get you out of “fight or flight” mode and into a calm state in which you can relax your nervous system and think more clearly. However, symptom relief is like cutting off the top of a weed without addressing the root. If you don’t address the thoughts, beliefs and stress responses underlying the anxiety, you will inevitably relapse back into anxious thoughts and responses.

Relapse is a result of resistance to treatment or change. It’s a natural and predictable response, which is why it’s essential that you have support, tools and strategies to move through the resistance phase to evolve out of the cycle.

Evolution requires that you shift or heal the underlying habitual thought patterns, and emotional responses that keep you stuck in the anxiety cycle.

True healing requires a three-pronged approach:

  1. Symptom Relief: Yes, managing the physical and emotional discomfort is crucial.
  2. Relapse Prevention: Equipping yourself with tools and strategies to navigate future challenges is essential.
  3. Peace and Happiness: Ultimately, you deserve to thrive, not just cope. Cultivating inner peace and joy becomes the foundation for lasting change.

Breaking the Cycle

The key to breaking free from the revolving door of anxiety lies in understanding the underlying causes. What fuels your anxious thoughts? Are they rooted in limiting beliefs, past experiences, or negative self-talk? Addressing these deeper issues – often residing in the subconscious – is where true transformation occurs.
